Strong Execution Amid Muted Order Flow

GE Vernova T&D India Limited delivered robust revenue growth in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, though new order bookings slowed significantly as transmission project awards moderated from the prior year's elevated levels.

Revenue for the quarter ended June 2026 reached INR 18.4 billion, up 38% year-on-year from INR 13.3 billion (earnings call, 2026-08-07). Profit before tax rose 26% to INR 4.9 billion from INR 3.9 billion in the same quarter last year. The company maintained an EBITDA margin of 25.1%, consistent with its "mid-20s" guidance.

However, order intake declined 30% to INR 11.4 billion from INR 16.2 billion a year earlier. CEO and Managing Director Sandeep Zanzaria attributed the lower bookings to "lower realization of TBCB market in Q4 '25, '26" (earnings call, 2026-08-07). Despite the quarterly slowdown, the company's order backlog remained substantial at approximately INR 209 billion as of June 2026, down just 2.5% from INR 213.6 billion in March.

Export Diversification Accelerates

A notable shift in the quarter was the geographic mix of new orders, with exports accounting for 46% of bookings. CFO Sushil Kumar characterized this as part of the "export diversification, which now stands at 46% of our Q1 orders" that the company has been building (earnings call, 2026-08-07).

Key wins included current and voltage transformers for GE Vernova entities in North America, a 400 kV gas-insulated switchgear order from entities in Spain and Morocco, and transformers for a semiconductor customer. The company also secured multiple grid automation packages from state utilities, engineering procurement construction firms, and data centers.

Notably, Kumar confirmed that a previously disclosed related-party transaction approval for up to INR 1,300 crores with a U.S. data center customer has not yet converted to a firm order, with finalization now expected "in the next 3, 6 months" (earnings call, 2026-08-07).

Margin Compression Explained

Gross margins compressed to 41.3% from 48.4% a year earlier and 47% in the prior quarter. Kumar detailed three factors: export revenue mix contributed 1-1.5 percentage points of decline, as exports represented only 30% of revenue this quarter versus higher percentages previously; elevated commodity prices reduced execution savings; and the ramp-up of a lower-margin high-power business segment reduced gross margins by 2-2.5 percentage points, though this was offset at the EBITDA level through operating leverage.

The company maintained its full-year margin guidance and emphasized the quality of its order book, with private customers now representing 77% of backlog, central utilities and PSUs contributing 21%, and state utilities just 2%.

Infrastructure Investment on Track

Zanzaria noted that "recent investment of all our manufacturing facilities are tracking on schedule," referring to the company's announced INR 10 billion capacity expansion program (earnings call, 2026-08-07). The company generated INR 4.3 billion in cash during the quarter, bringing total available cash to INR 29.3 billion, with approximately INR 13 billion earmarked for capital expenditure and dividends.
